چکیده

Hydromagnesite occurrences in British Columbia have been recognized since the beginning of the 19th century (Reinecke, 1920; Young, 1915). However, the known occurrences of hydromagnesite are too small to compete with the large sparry magnesite deposits in British Columbia (Grant, 1987; Simandl et al., 1996 a,b and Simandl, 2000) as potential sources of raw materials for the production of industrial grade caustic, dead-burned and fused magnesia or magnesium metal. This paper summarizes the information on British Columbia’s hydromagnesite occurrences based on published data and 2 days of property examination in the 1997 field season. It also identifies a possible market for brucite and these hydrated carbonates as flame retardants. It is the first document that addresses the potential use of hydromagnesite raw material for flame retardants. Also highlighted are the difficulties in developing similar European hydromagnesite-huntite deposits over the last 20 years. Although much effort and focus has been put into the development of these deposits, they still only account for a very small portion of the flame retardant market. In British Columbia, exploration and/or re-evaluation of known hydromagnesite occurrences may result in the discovery of deposits with a potential as a source of natural flame retardants. Rapid growth of the inorganic, natural flame retardant market or participation of the developer with the existing captive market are essential for the successful development of these resources.

Rapid precipitation of magnesite micro-crystals from Mg(OH)2- H2O-CO2 slurry enhanced by NaOH and a heat-ageing step (from ∼20 to 90°C)

This study proposes a simple and novel synthesis route for rhombohedral single crystals (<2µm) of magnesite. This synthesis can be summarized by two main sequential reactions: (1) aqueous carbonation of synthetic brucite (Mg(OH) 2) by injection of CO 2 in a highly alkaline medium (2Molal of NaOH) at ambient temperature (∼20°C), leading to precipitation of platy-compacted aggregates of dypingite...

Study of the Thermal Properties and the Fire Performance of Flame Retardant-Organic PCM in Bulk Form

The implementation of organic phase change materials (PCMs) in several applications such as heating and cooling or building comfort is an important target in thermal energy storage (TES). However, one of the major drawbacks of organic PCMs implementation is flammability. The addition of flame retardants to PCMs or shape-stabilized PCMs is one of the approaches to address this problem and improv...

Flame Retardant Applications in Camping Tents and Potential Exposure

Concern has mounted over health effects caused by exposure to flame retardant additives used in consumer products. Significant research efforts have focused particularly on exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) used in furniture and electronic applications. However, little attention has focused on applications in textiles, particularly textiles meeting a flammability standard known...

Phosphorus-based Flame Retardancy Mechanisms—Old Hat or a Starting Point for Future Development?

Different kinds of additive and reactive flame retardants containing phosphorus are increasingly successful as halogen-free alternatives for various polymeric materials and applications. Phosphorus can act in the condensed phase by enhancing charring, yielding intumescence, or through inorganic glass formation; and in the gas phase through flame inhibition. Occurrence and efficiency depend, not...

Effect of Oxygen Plasma Pretreatment and Titanium Dioxide Overlay Coating on Flame Retardant Finished Cotton Fabrics

Flammability properties of plasma pretreated cotton fabrics subjected to flame-retardant treatment were studied. Plasma pretreatment, using an atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ), was applied to cotton fabrics to enhance material properties, while retaining inherent advantages of the substrates. An organic phosphorus compound (flame-retardant agent, FR) together with a melamine resin (crossl...
